The humanitarian crisis in Ukraine is heart-breaking. The impact of the attack on this country is far-reaching. Like me, you may want to help the Ukrainians. There are many calls for donations in the press and on social media that highlight charities accepting money. Before you donate, decide what type of aid you want to support and give only to reputable non-profit organizations.

The Ukrainians need many kinds of assistance, including and certainly not limited to:

  • Humanitarian aid: food, water, shelter, clothing, sanitation, and other basic human needs
  • Medical care and supplies
  • Protection for children, older adults, and other vulnerable people
  • Support for refugees
  • Food, shelter and medical care for animals, including pets and zoo animals
  • Support and protection for journalists covering the war

What speaks to you?

When you decide which relief efforts you would like to support, research reputable organizations that address that need. An internet search will generate lists of many charities. If you are unfamiliar with an organization that interests you, read their website. Learn what percentage of your gift will go to administrative costs such as fund raising, and how much will go to providing services or aid. Read their review at one of these charity-rating websites.

Right now, the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine is front and center in the news. Eventually it no longer will be. The need for help, however, will continue. Consider making a gift now and making another later when Ukraine is no longer the focus of the media’s attention.

How much should you give?

The amount is a personal decision. Any amount helps. Small amounts combined can have a significant impact.

I believe coordination among aid organizations is important. United States-based charities can raise and deliver money. It is the people on the ground in Ukraine and neighboring countries, however, who know what aid is needed, where, and how much. Giving to charities that are collaborating with others will help your dollars get to where they can have the greatest impact.

I recently made donations. First and foremost was humanitarian aid. Being an equestrian, I am also concerned about Ukraine’s horses and their people. Horses are pets, but not ones that you can easily take with you when you leave home. Currently, there is a huge effort to evacuate horses out of Ukraine and, if that isn’t possible, to find safe places for them. It took searching, but eventually I found a credible United States horse organization that is raising funds and collaborating with the Ukrainian Equestrian Federation Charity Foundation [LINK: https://helpukrainehorses.eu/]to evacuate horses and import feed and provide shelter to those still in the country.

If you are moved to help the Ukrainians, find what is important to you and research charities that are addressing your concern.
