Not only are older adults at high risk of contracting COVID-19, but many older Americans are also experiencing economic hardship in the wake of the pandemic.
There are many reasons contributing to this.
- Millions of adults ages 65 and older were working at the beginning of this year. Since March, the pandemic has forced millions of older workers out of the workforce.
- It is more difficult for adults 50 and older compared to younger workers to find jobs, especially in the middle of a pandemic.
- When they do locate work, it is not unusual for seniors to take a 25 to 40 percent pay cut.
- Many seniors have little or no savings on which to draw.
There is help available.
The National Council on Aging (NCOA) provides a free service called BenefitsCheckup®. This is a confidential online service that helps adults 55 and older with limited income locate federal, state, and private benefit programs. BenefitsCheckUp provides information on over 2000 programs available in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
If you or a loved one needs help, visit, benefitscheckup.org to learn what types of assistance are available. The service provides information on programs that can help with food, medication, health care, income assistance, housing and utilities, tax relief, veterans benefits, employment, and more.
To locate benefits for which you might qualify, you first need to enter your zip code, then complete a short questionnaire. You will then get a customized report on the programs for which you may qualify and information on how to apply. Some programs have online applications or forms that can be downloaded, completed, and mailed to the program’s headquarters. For those programs that require you to contact them directly, the report includes the necessary information.
You are not required to have internet access to use the BenefitsCheckUp service. You can also call its toll free at 888-268-6706.
