We are all feeling the impact of inflation at the grocery check-out. When I buy groceries each week, I watch in dismay as the cost ticks up.

According to the Consumer Price Index’s March data, grocery store prices were 10 percent higher in March of 2022 compared to March of last year. The Consumer Price Index also predicts that food-at-home prices (grocery store or supermarket food purchases) will increase between 5.0 and 6.0 percent this year.

What can we do to help reduce the cost of food? Here are Seven Ideas to Save Money on Groceries that I have found helpful.

Plan Meals

When you plan meals, you can create your weekly menu based on grocery store specials and the food already in your cupboard and freezer. Meal planning avoids last minute dashes to the store which can lead to impulse purchases.

Shop With a List

Shopping with a grocery list of the items you need, and sticking to it, will reduce impulse, and potentially more expensive purchases and things you don’t need. That said, if you find an item on sale that you know you will use, buy it and incorporate it into a future meal.

Reduce Spoilage

Many people end up pitching spoiled food, especially produce and dairy. If you can’t eat all the fresh food that you buy, choose smaller containers or buy by the piece. Even when it costs more per pound, any savings gained by buying larger quantities is lost when you throw out the spoiled food.

Shop the freezer case for vegetables, fruit, and meat. Plan to eat these later in the week when the fresh food is used up.

Use Grocery Store Rewards Programs

Many grocery stores have a free customer loyalty program. These programs give you access to member-only discounts that are deducted at the register. Some offer electronic coupons that are automatically redeemed when you check out. Do be aware that these programs track what you buy.

Purchase Store Brands

Most store brand items are just as good as name-brand products. Substituting these for name-brand goods will save you money.

Look at Alternatives to Traditional Grocery Stores

Shopping online or at food cooperatives and discount stores may save money. Compare prices and factor in any shipping charges. Having groceries delivered from your local store can help reduce impulse purchases. Again, consider whether this, with any delivery charges, will save you money.

Pay With a Grocery Rewards Credit Card

Using a credit card that offers rewards on grocery purchases can help offset your bill. This works only if you pay your credit card in full each month: paying interest on purchases will erode any rewards earned. Click here for a list of cards to consider.
